Cinematography In Horror
Cinematography plays a very important role in the film industry. It’s the art and technology of motion-picture photography. This includes the lighting of the set or location; the choice of cameras, lenses, filters, film stock; the camera angles, movements; and the integration of any special effects. Good cinematography indulges viewers in the film. Giving you different types of feelings depending on the techniques used.
In the horror genre, fear is an essential element. To deliver that in a film, certain techniques are needed. Cinematographers may add perspective shots, tracking shots, wide shots, and extreme closeups. Extreme close-ups invade the character’s intimate space. They fill the whole screen, which emphasizes the dramatic importance of the scene by intensifying the emotion the character is feeling and allows us to feel sympathy.
Cinematographers can also add handheld shots with
shaky footage to make viewers feel more engaged. Infrasound is added as well. These are sounds that can’t be heard. It’s a wavelength of sound that is just out of
range for human ears to hear. However,
this does not stop it from causing a reaction in humans. The 2007 film “Paranormal Activity” and the 2002
French psychological-horror film “Irreversible” heavily utilize this technique
to create an uneasy feeling. Lighting is also extremely important. Furthermore, lack of lighting and silhouettes
may also make viewers feel tense. This
is because our brains begin to imagine the full, clear image without the
shadows and imagine those darker places conceal horrific things.
In short, cinematography can help greatly in horror films. This art has evolved through time, improving, and making these films more fearful. With the right tricks, it can immerse the viewers into the film. There is an abundance of techniques that can make you feel uneasy and tense; from lighting and specific camera shots to infrasonic sounds. Without the complex art of good cinematography, we wouldn’t have the iconic horror films we have today.
